Model Information:

The Aermacchi Ala d’Oro 350 represents the pinnacle of Aermacchi’s four-stroke Grand Prix racing programme during the 1960s. Developed exclusively for the highly competitive 350 cc World Championship, it embodied the company’s aviation engineering heritage, combining an exceptionally lightweight chassis with a remarkably refined single-cylinder racing engine.

Power came from a 349 cc air-cooled four-stroke single-cylinder engine with OHV valve actuation, fed by a large Dell’Orto racing carburettor and coupled to a close-ratio gearbox. Throughout its development, the engine evolved from approximately 33 hp to over 40 hp in full factory specification, while maintaining the broad torque delivery and outstanding reliability that became hallmarks of the Ala d’Oro. Unlike many contemporary high-revving multi-cylinder rivals, the Aermacchi relied on low weight, tractable power delivery and exceptional chassis balance to remain highly competitive on fast and technical circuits alike.

The motorcycle featured a lightweight double-cradle tubular steel frame, race-developed Ceriani suspension components and large twin-leading-shoe drum brakes, delivering outstanding handling characteristics. Continuous factory development introduced improvements including revised cylinder heads, higher-compression pistons, enlarged carburettors, five-speed gearboxes, dry clutch systems and stronger chassis construction, allowing the Ala d’Oro 350 to remain competitive throughout the decade.

The Ala d’Oro 350 achieved its greatest success during the second half of the 1960s, when riders such as Renzo Pasolini, Kel Carruthers, Gilberto Milani and Derek Woodman consistently challenged the dominant factory teams. Renowned for its agility, precise steering and impressive corner speed, it became one of the finest four-stroke single-cylinder Grand Prix motorcycles ever produced and one of the last great challengers before two-stroke technology reshaped international motorcycle racing.

Today, the Aermacchi Ala d’Oro 350 is regarded as one of the most desirable Italian Grand Prix racing motorcycles of its generation. Combining elegant engineering, proven competition pedigree and exceptional rarity, it occupies a distinguished place in the history of classic motorcycle racing and remains highly sought after by serious collectors worldwide.
