Model Information:

The Yamaha TZ750 was a legendary racing motorcycle produced by Yamaha Motor Company between 1974 and 1979. Designed to dominate Formula 750, it earned a reputation as one of the most powerful and difficult-to-tame bikes of its era.

The engine was the heart of the beast: a liquid-cooled, two-stroke, in-line four-cylinder engine that initially had a displacement of 694 cc (in 1974) and quickly evolved to 747 cc. Power also increased significantly, from around 90 hp in early versions to about 120 hp (and up to 140 hp in some factory variants) at high RPMs.

Its impressive power-to-weight ratio (approximately 152 kg dry) made it a true rocket on the straights. It could reach speeds of up to 290 km/h (180 mph), an astonishing figure for the time.

It featured a lightweight tubular steel frame and magnesium components to minimize weight. However, its explosive power delivery made it very demanding to ride, and only the most experienced riders could get the most out of it. The legendary Kenny Roberts even famously said it had “too much of everything.”

The TZ750 achieved over 200 race victories worldwide, dominating Formula 750 and other competitions. Riders like Joey Dunlop secured historic wins with it, even setting lap records on iconic circuits such as the Snaefell Mountain Course. Its success was so great that it allowed many privateer riders to compete head-to-head with factory machines.

The Yamaha TZ750 was a masterpiece of engineering for its time, a “missile on wheels” that redefined speed and power in motorcycle racing, leaving an indelible mark on the history of race bikes.
