MODEL INFORMATION
The Honda VTR1000SP, also known as the RC51 (RVT1000R in the US), was a V-twin motorcycle designed specifically by Honda to compete in the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) in the early 2000s. Its primary objective was to dethrone the dominant twin-cylinder Ducati machines, which had been very successful in the category.
In the late 1990s, Ducati dominated WSBK with its powerful twin-cylinder engines. Honda, with its four-cylinder RC45, struggled to keep up. It was then that the strategic decision was made to create a championship-specific twin-cylinder motorcycle, the VTR1000SP (SP for “Sport Production”).
The Honda VTR1000SP1 made its official WSBK debut in the 2000 season. It was a spectacular year for Honda and its star rider, Colin Edwards. The bike, despite being a completely new twin-cylinder design, proved highly competitive. Edwards achieved eight victories that season and, in an intense battle, won the 2000 World Superbike Championship.
The Second Title and the SP2 (2002): For the 2002 season, Honda introduced the VTR1000SP2, an evolution of the original bike with significant improvements. This season was epic, with a memorable battle between Colin Edwards and Troy Bayliss (Ducati). The championship was decided in the final race at Imola, where Edwards, in a masterful performance, took victory and was crowned 2002 World Superbike Champion for the second time. The RC51 racked up a total of 26 wins and 30 podiums in its three years of official participation in WSBK.
Following the success of 2002, Honda decided to withdraw its official support from WSBK. The main reason was the shift in focus toward MotoGP, from 500cc two-stroke bikes to 990cc four-stroke bikes. This meant that development resources would be shifted to the new premier class, leaving the RC51 without factory support in WSBK, although it continued to compete with privateer teams and its Honda VTR 1000 SPW.
Honda sold the models RC51 for track use only ain the early 2000s. Called the “Basic Racer”, it was developed by HRC to provide a better starting point for racers. Shown for the first time at Suzuka Eight-Hour race, it has a race-only exhaust system developed jointly by Akrapovic and HRC, a modified air filter system and a simplified wiring harness without plug-ins for road equipment such as lights and indicators.
A “Complete Racer” was offered alongside the Basic model. It will have an HRC race kit and makes 170bhp at 11,000rpm. The compression ratio is a high 12.7:1. It weigh just 170kg (374lb) and has a 24-litre (5.28-gallon) tank, compared to the Basic Racer’s standard 18-litre (3.96-gallon) tank. Also, The radiator and electronics were improved. The price of the Complete Racer was $107,999 (May 2001) and only were produced few units.
The Suzuka 8 Hours is an iconic and highly prestigious endurance race in Japan, where Japanese manufacturers, especially Honda, place a great emphasis on winning. It’s a race that serves not only to test the reliability and performance of the bikes but also as a technological showcase.
Although the Honda VTR1000SP RC51 was primarily designed for WSBK, its robustness and performance made it a natural candidate for endurance racing. It’s important to note that WSBK bikes are often adapted for the Suzuka 8 Hours, and the RC51 was no exception. Riders such as Colin Edwards, Valentino Rossi, and Katoh raced and won with the RC51.

More about this bike: Bike in good condition and ready to race. This Honda VTR1000 SP-2 with SPW kit components and painted fluorescent red like Suzuka 8H was used by Team Holzhauer (Germany) in IDM and wildcard in World SBK.
At its heart beats a completely rebuilt and race-ready 999cc V-twin engine. It features new cylinder liners and Pistal pistons, stainless steel flat-plane valves for higher compression, and flowed cylinder heads to optimize gas flow. The system is complemented by HRC (Honda Racing Corporation) camshafts and a lightened HRC crankshaft. These are key elements for maximizing power and response.
Power is supplied through 62mm throttle bodies with HRC venturis, and electronic management is handled by a fully programmable Ignitech ECU, which includes specific software and mapping to get the most out of the engine, estimated at a power output of between 155 and 160 hp using racing fuel. A slipper clutch and a superfinished gearbox ensure efficient and long-lasting power transmission, while a quickshifter allows for instant clutchless gear changes. The complete exhaust system is a titanium Akrapovic SBK, identical to the one used on the factory bikes (with reconditioned silencers), ensuring optimal gas evacuation and a significant weight reduction.
The chassis and suspension are top-spec. The Showa kit front forks are equipped with Öhlins cartridges, complemented by an adjustable Harris front triple clamp. At the rear, an Öhlins TTX-36 shock absorber and an Öhlins steering damper are fitted. The braking system is purely racing-grade, designed by Brembo. At the front, Brembo P4 32/36 CNC monobloc calipers with titanium pistons (SBK race calipers) operate on 6 mm Brembo Racing brake discs. At the rear, a Brembo P2 30 CNC caliper ensures powerful braking. The brake and clutch master cylinders are Brembo PR19x18 and Accossato PR16x18 radials, respectively, offering exquisite feel.
The obsession with performance extends to every detail: HRC Kit radiators and oil cooler for optimal thermal management, a 24-liter HRC Kit aluminum fuel tank ideal for endurance riding, and HRC Kit instrumentation with a tachometer and water temperature gauge. The bike also features HRC Kit carbon air intake ducts with instrument panel mounts and a large, HCR-style carbon airbox.
The wiring is completely new and custom-made by specialist Multiteck, reducing weight and simplifying installation. The lightweight OZ aluminum wheels and the extensive use of titanium bolts throughout the bike are testament to the relentless pursuit of maximum lightness and performance.
