MODEL INFORMATION
In the 1990s, to encourage participation and revitalize the Grand Prix grids of GP500, Yamaha made the decision to sell engines from their successful YZR500s to private teams. For these engines to compete, two main chassis manufacturers were chosen: British Harris Performance Products and French ROC (Serge Rosset’s French ROC outfit). Thus, the “Harris Yamaha 500 GP” was born from the combination of a Yamaha engine and a chassis designed and built by Harris.
The base engine Yamaha sold was a slightly modified version of their factory YZR500 V4 500cc engine, often derived from the 1990 YZR500 (0WC1) model, which had been the basis of Wayne Rainey’s first world title.
Yamaha YZR500 V4 499cc, two-stroke engine. Although they were “privateer” engines, they were still very powerful, with outputs around 155 hp. They differed from the factory engines in some details, such as the use of aluminum crankcases instead of magnesium to reduce costs.
The distinctive element of the Harris Yamaha was the aluminum twin-spar chassis manufactured by Harris Performance. Steve Harris, founder of Harris Performance, was a legendary motorcycle engineer who made a name for himself building racing chassis.
Although the engine was Yamaha and the chassis Harris, the bikes usually featured a variety of high-quality components, such as Öhlins suspensions, racing brakes of top manufacturers, and other race-specific parts.
Competition History
The Harris Yamaha 500 GP, along with the ROC Yamahas, were the “missiles” for privateer riders in the 500cc class. They actively competed from the early 90s, allowing non-factory teams and riders access to competitive Grand Prix bikes.
While they generally didn’t fight for world championships against factory bikes, they did achieve notable results. Several riders made their 500cc debut with these private teams. The Harris Yamaha 500 GP represents an era when privateer teams had a greater presence in the premier class of motorcycling, thanks to the availability of factory engines and specialized chassis. These bikes have become highly sought-after collector’s items.
The collaboration between Yamaha and chassis manufacturers like Harris was key to maintaining excitement and competitiveness on the Grand Prix grids during a golden age for 500cc motorcycles.
Sean Emmett competed for the Harris 500 GP team, which was sponsored by Shell. This team was managed by Steve Harris, the engineer behind Harris Performance. Emmett was with the team from 1992 to 1995.
